    Re: High School Football

ok...it takes 11...how many besides what you named can you name...i have quite a few friends that played for appy then...it wasn't just mabe, clark, and huff. And do you honestly think that in overall athletic talent that appy had everyone outmatched??..lol...not in a million years...the reason you remember those names is because they were GREAT HARDNOSED FOOTBALL PLAYERS. There is a difference. The reason you can't see past ur ideas of "gettin drilled" etc etc is because like i said..most everyone around here has forgotten what it takes to win in the 14th game. It don't begin in august and end in december. It begins in December when the previous season ends and ends the following december.

That was BC's field. They returned the opening kick for a TD. Appy had every chance to quit. But bullied BC for that win. It ain't like it just rained and snowed on BC...It rained and smowed on both of em. If BC relied less on finesse and more on power they could have won anyways. Case In Point.

    Re: High School Football

I believe that school enrollment is a more deciding fact in the recent championship games than style. The LPD teams of the 70's and 80's played schools that were a more even match in terms of enrollment. It is true that there have been occasions when a much smaller school has won (Norton- Madison '72}, but as a rule the larger school or a school of comparable size has won. It was correctly pointed out in an earlier post that enrollment growth in Region B was not due to consolidation- the problem faced by SWVA schools is massive population growth in Eastern Virginia. Might add - Virginia has actually seen little consolidation in the last fifty years compared to Kentucky or North Carolina.

Until the Divisions came along you played who ever. Size of schools didn't matter.

Some ofyou are missing a few things. Burton had what i thought felt was a championship team. And i still think they got cheated out of it.

However, the team they played, well they had a heck of game plan. Keep the LB's back further and let them read and attack. Let them get what yardage they could but not big plays and big yards. Make them grind it out.

Then they used the split back field to run and block and power their way to each score. Eating up the clock and wearing on Burton's two way players.

Guys we all know what it is about. If you can run the ball and keep it 3rd and short and convert those 3rd down's, and you have a good D. You can win a state title. That has been proven over and over. From the games of the 70's, 80, 90's. 03, to this past years game that Burton got cheated out of.

You use what you got. But usually being able to run the ball with consistency, a good defense, well look at the titles over the years and see.

It's just not about the athletes. It's sometimes about the coaching. We don't having the coaching we use to. Some of that is because, well coaches can't push like they use to. They push hard, kids quit. Sorry but that is just how it is. And i've seen it first hand. And more so here in the LPD than anywhere lately.

They're still in SWVA buddy. Still I agree with you to an extent. Look at teams in TN, I'm especially familiar with Knoxville area football and Knox Catholic and Knox Webb are both powerhouse programs and both run a wing T style offense. My opinion is this, it's easier to sustain succes running the football. Experience doesn't come into play as much when all you're doing is lining up slamming it between the tackles. However, I do think the jet sweep stuff has benefited Burton. If they still tried to line up and knock people off the ball they would have never been 10-0 this season IMHO.

    Re: High School Football

They might not have been 10-0 regular season...but then again they might have been 13-1 and the one not happening in game 14. It ain't how ya get there..it's what ya do once you are there. And like i said...we were talkin region d...i know richlands has a good team..they always have...but every news cast i saw of them featured runs more often than passes. And if are going to try to tell me that richlands is a passive team i'm gonna deem you insane.

They're a very balanced team. They certainly don't line up under center and slam it between the tackles. They spread you out and let the Jennings kid use his athleticism in the open field. Certainly not a smash mouth running team.

    [ QUOTE ]
Does a school get more athletic money from the state for playing up? I know many of the inner city schools in Richmond play AAA when they have AA and A numbers.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You've got it backwards - schools PAY dues to the VHSL; they get NO athletic $ FROM them.
The Richmond schools play up because they don't want to be called "small schools".

    Re: High School Football

For those of you who feel the recent lack of state titles in the area really is due to the kids' lack of toughness or work ethic, then why is it unique to the LPD and/or SWVa? It seems to me that if kids in general don't work as hard as they used to, then it would affect other areas of the state too, not just this one.
